Overview

Achievement First Amistad High has one goal: 100% of students will be accepted into four-year colleges and universities. The school prepares students to meet this goal by providing a challenging course of studies and supporting students in their growth outside the classroom. Here, we combine rigorous courses and high expectations with a host of support services more common at affluent and private high schools, including SAT prep, intensive college counseling and tutoring. As students grow from grade nine to 12, instruction shifts from a teacher-directed approach to student-led exchanges of ideas. Outside of class, students grow as athletes, volunteers, leaders and responsible community members through participation in the school’s extracurricular, varsity athletic and arts programs. Our support extends beyond high school graduation, with high school counselors working closely with our alumni as they attend colleges including University of Connecticut, Yale University, Wesleyan University, Southern Connecticut State University, Brown University, Howard University, University of Pennsylvania and many more. School Leader

Morgan Barth is the principal of AF Amistad High School. Mr. Barth and his family have lived in New Haven for many years, and he has had several roles at Achievement First since starting in 2004 as a 5^th grade reading teacher at Elm City College Prep Middle. Most recently, Mr. Barth was the Regional Superintendent for a group of AF elementary and middle schools in Connecticut. Before that, he worked at the Connecticut State Department of Education where he led the Turnaround Office, supporting school improvement around the state. From 2011 – 2013, Mr. Barth was the principal of AF Bridgeport Academy Middle; in his two years there, the school was among the fastest improving in all of Connecticut. From 2008-2011, he served as principal of Elm City College Prep Elementary. During his time there, the school was ranked the # 1 school for African-American student achievement in the state of Connecticut. Mr. Barth grew up in New York City and began his teaching career as a Teach for America Corps Member in rural Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta. He holds a certificate from the superintendent’s program the University of Connecticut Neag School of Education, a master's degree in education administration from National Louis University and a bachelor's degree in history from Williams College.
